Sustainable Agriculture

Responding to the climate crisis, Jagruti started working with farmers towards sustainable agriculture.

20 farmers in Chunchwad, 20 in Karikatti, 20 in Surapur and 10 in Hindalagi were picked, organinsed and were motivated to move towards sustainable agriculture in a very small way. Now, these farmers grow sugarcane, rice and vegetables organically.

The vegetables that are grown, are sold in their own village in Karikatti. Every family is saving more than Rs. 200/- per week by growing their own vegetables. Making compost and NADEP is a regular habit for women now. They also prepare organic pesticides thmeselves. Thousands of fruit yielding tees are planted in about 50 farms of Surapur, Hindalgi, Karikatti and Chunchwad.

Zameel Khanapuri, a paraplegic youth was helped by 'Taluka Angavikalara Sanghatane' to open a shop for his livelihood. Unfortunately the shop was a failure. Instead he showed interest in farming. So he was given a task of maintaining kitchen garden in Jagruti's office. All the team members now work on composting and Zameel has successfully grown a beautiful organic kitchen garden in the premises of Jagruti office at Goshyanatti.

The vision is to completely revolutionise agricultural methods and to move to organic and sustainable agriculture in the villages.

"Raite" a brand started by Jagruti for value addition and marketed by Jagruta Mahila Okkoota, is producing and selling organic jaggery, turmeric and jackfruit chips. "Raite" is a Kannada word that translates to "a female agriculturist".
